Over the past few months various government departments such as Departments of Mineral Resources, Social Development, Labour, Health, Home Affairs, SASSA, TEBA, DESTEA and NDA have been meeting up with EX-mineworkers from the Lejweleputswa District. The purpose of their meetings was to identify challenges faced by Ex-mine workers and assist where possible with services from the respective departments.
The Department of Social Development conducted household profiling on all ex-miners before holding dialogue sessions with former mine workers from Botshabelo, Allenridge, Welkom, Virginia and Bothaville. These activities were build up activities to the Ex-miners Imbizo which was hosted by the Deputy Minister for the Department of Mineral Resources Mr Godfrey Olifant, Deputy Minister for Social Development Me Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu and Deputy Minister for Labour Nkosi Patekile Holomisa at Welkom on June 25, 2016.
The purpose of the Imbizo was for the three departments to meet with ex-miners to discuss how their social challenges can be addressed. High on the agenda was the issue of the lack of information on compensation and medical benefits due to ex-miners which were attended to by officials from Dep of Labour and Health.
