million for Projects during International Women’s Day
This year’s
International Women’s Day; 8 March 2012 was celebrated in
style by awarding R10m to projects for the 2012/13 financial
year. The MEC for Social Development, Me Sisi Ntombela said
she chose to celebrate this day with projects beneficiaries
because most of them are women. Other projects that
benefited were youth projects in the form of Youth Clubs.
Funded projects range from community based soup kitchens,
hair and beauty salons, capacity training to income
generation.

The MEC said CDP’s are there both monitor and assist
projects to develop as they are expected to be in touch
with communities on regular basis. No funds will be
transferred to individual accounts and stipends due to
individuals will be handled in a certain manner so that they
are not paid to people who do not qualify. The MEC also
announced the Departmental Anti-corruption unit which has
been established to deal with amongst others; projects
misusing departmental projects funds. The unit is manned by
Mr. Miya and Mr. Molahloe who are based at Old Mutual
Building.

Monitoring also presented an overview on departmental
funding framework which ensures alignment and compliance of
funded projects. She said the department is targeting needy,
poverty stricken and vulnerable communities. The department
publishes; calls for business and service plans on local
newspapers in September and appraisals and costing is done
between December and January every year. Service plans are
approved in March and payments are done annually at the
beginning of April.

Fifty three (53) newly appointed Social Workers
More than
Fifty newly appointed Social Workers who completed their
degrees in 2011 will be placed at different Free State
Province’s Department of Social Development Districts.
This is to ensure that the Social work services are
improved and accelerated in all the districts offices of
the department. Motheo District will be receiving about
five (5), Xhariep District, will get ten (10),
Lejweleputswa District about, thirteen (13), Fezile Dabi
District, nine(9) and Thabo Mofutsanyana District,
sixteen(16) new social workers
This was
the announcement done by the MEC for Social Development,
Free State Province, Me Sisi Ntombela when she was
welcoming about Fifty three (53) newly appointed Social
Workers who attended the welcome ceremony and a weeklong
induction programme in Bloemfontein last week. She told
them (Social Workers) that the Department of Social
Development is the only home for them and there are
about 290 Social Workers currently, serving the
communities of the Free state. She said she was
disappointed to have lost 16 Social Workers to sister
departments in 2011 due to unforeseen circumstances.
The MEC said she is excited to see the
new social workers full of energy and looking forward to
go to their work stations and start operating. She
acknowledged that there is still a serious challenge
with office space but the department is trying its
utmost to get the office space in order. She told them
to display positive attitude and to respect the
vulnerable communities that they will be working with.
Name badges will also be given to all departmental
Social workers for the communities to know the names of
officials serving them . Social Workers who have valid
drivers licences will be provided with their own
subsidized cars and new cellphones were given to all of
them. About 48 laptops were also issued to the remaining
officials who were appointed in 2011 to make their work
with the communities easier.

Dr. Malekga Kganaga attends Free State PACCA meeting

The Chief Director for HIV and AIDS
at the National Department of Social Development; Dr
Malekga Kganaga attended the PACCA meeting which was
held at Motheo District Office last week. Dr Kganaga is
the Chairperson of the National coordination Structure
for orphaned and vulnerable children, viz, the National
Action Committee for Children Affected by HIV & AIDS (NACCA).

Vulnerable by HIV & AIDS (South Africa). She
acknowledged representivity of various stakeholders
within the Free State Provincial Action Committee for
Children Affected by HIV & AIDS (PACCA) and she
particularly appreciated the participation of the
Department of the Premier (HIV & AIDS component and
Office of the Rights of Children), and the GCIS in this
forum.
